River's Grace Yoga

I keep hearing about Ayurveda.  What is it?

Ayurveda is the science, the practice, and the study of being and feeling fully alive through aligning with the earth's rhythms, seasons and elements on the outside and on the inside.

Technically, the word "Ayurveda" is translated into "The Science of Life."  Both of the terms "Science" and "Life" have definitions of openness and both describe a process.  Ayurveda studies the life process, rather than the dis-ease process, making Ayurveda a system of health and wholeness. Instead of focusing on dis-integration and separation, it works to promote life and longevity.  Ayurveda's practices encourage the establishment and maintenance of health through assessing the elemental balance within each person.

Ayurveda originated in India over 10,000 years ago first through the direct transmission of the holy men of India or the Rishis.  As the universe contracted, there was a need for verbal teachings.  Following the verbal teachings, the writings of the sacred texts came into being to serve those that needed the teachings in written form.  Here we are today, learning to re-integrate into the wholeness that already is, as it is and always has been the purpose of human life.  Ayurveda teaches us how to come back into our being-ness, (into our Self), through aligning with the elements of nature, as the elements are the constituents of everything, on the outside and on the inside.

Can you practice too much Ujjayi Pranayama or Svaroopa® yoga asanas?

Yes and No.

Doing more Svaroopa® yoga practices is a great way to find deep healing and transformation.  However, the idea of incremental openings is the key.  It is not a good idea to do a lot one day and then less or even nothing the next day.

It is best to choose a time and place for your practice to be steady and consistent.  Develop dedication and discipline and you will reap many benefits.  Start so that it is easy for you to incorporate into your daily schedule and then you can build up from there.
